The use
of space capabilities by the US military has changed
significantly since the first military satellites were
orbited. Continuous improvements in space technology have
lead to the development of more advanced systems which require
space capabilities to be viewed from a new perspective.
Military, civil, and commercial sectors of the United States
are increasingly dependent on space capabilities. This
dependence can be viewed by potential adversaries as a
potential vulnerability.
The problem of spacecraft protection is complex and
difficult. Current spacecraft are not protected against
manmade threats, not because spacecraft are easily replaceable
or unimportant, but simply because our potential adversaries
did not have the technological capabilities to threaten our
spacecraft. China’s destruction of its inactive Fengyun-1C
weather satellite in January 2007 has changed this thinking.
In response to this changed mindset, SURVIAC uses its
expertise to apply survivability concepts relative to
spacecraft and the space environment. SURVIAC supports
organizations in the identification of space system asymmetric
vulnerabilities/threats and the development of methods to
reduce the risk of these threats. These efforts emphasize
open source research and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
technology and products to develop countermeasure concepts to
defeat potential adversarial attacks on our space assets.
SURVIAC supports customers in the development of a space
radar. SURVIAC provided comprehensive technical support
capabilities during development to define and document needs
across a broad base of DoD, Intelligence Community, and civil
users. The scope of these efforts includes requirements
development, mission analysis, and planning support.
SURVIAC also assists customers in the technical analysis of
survivability/vulnerability aspects of R&D products in the
areas of engineering, testing, integration and development of
new and existing space systems and technologies across all
space and missile mission areas.
